The first of the intensive training sessions, Training for International Commercial Mediators and Arbitrators, was for Turkish and Israeli participants, and was held at the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce September 26-29, 2006.

The four-day course in Turkey was divided into two modules. The first three training days were dedicated to the study and practical exercise of mediation, and were conducted by Prof. Giuseppe De Palo (President of ADR Center and Project Team Leader), and Ms. Manon Schonewille (President of ACB Mediation, the Netherlands). On the fourth day, Mr. Dominic Spenser Underhill (International Commercial Arbitration specialist, London, England) offered the participants an analysis of the most significant aspects of international commercial arbitration. At the conclusion of the training, participants received a certificate of participation and a CD-ROM complete with the training materials.

This promotion for this advanced ADR training was very successful: more than 100 Turkish and Israeli professionals applied for the course. In order to maintain a strong student/teacher ratio, however, enabling the trainers to give personal attention and assistance to each trainee, the session was limited to a select number of participants. After a careful review procedure, based upon criteria fixed by the European Commission, 22 persons were invited to participate. Because of the high level of interest in this training, the European Commission and the MEDA Project Team decided to increase the number of training sessions to take place in the MEDA region.
