The workshop for jurists, held at the Beirut Chamber of Commerce on April 27-28, 2006, was a great success: 72 representatives of the legal communities of Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and West Bank & Gaza participated.
The theme of the first day was International Business Dispute Resolution – A View From Europe and its Increasing Relevance for the Legal Communities of Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and West Bank & Gaza. The topic for the second day was Settlement of Commercial Disputes in the Mediterranean - An International Dialogue Between Judges, Lawyers, and Alternative Dispute Resolution Specialists. The turnout was outstanding—the entire Beirut Bar Association was involved.
The keynote speaker was Prof. Giuseppe De Palo, who was assisted by various local and European representatives, among whom were Prof. Ibrahim Najjar (Professor of Law, University Saint-Joseph - Beirut), Judge Béatrice Brenneur (Court of Appeals of Grenoble), Mr. Boutros Doumit (President, Beirut Bar Association), Amb. Franco Mistretta (Ambassador of the Republic of Italy in Lebanon), Judge Francesco Antonio Genovese (Italian Supreme Court), and Mr. Christian Duve (Chairman, Working Group on Arbitration and ADR of the Council of the European Bars and Law Societies - Germany), who all tendered thoughtful and enlightening presentations.
