On November 28-29, 2005, the workshop International Business Dispute Resolution – A View from Europe and its Increasing Relevance for the Legal Communities in Turkey and Israel convened in Istanbul, Turkey. Over 46 members of the Turkish and Israeli legal communities, including in-house counsel, private practitioners, members of the judiciary, academics, and representatives of the Ministry of Justice, participated in the workshop.
Prof. Giuseppe De Palo (Team Leader and ADR Center President) was the primary presenter of the workshop, which included a video demonstrating "Mediation in Action." Professor Kemal Dayinlarli, Professor of Law at Atilim University, gave a presentation on the state of arbitration in Turkey, and Michael Tsur, Director of the Mediation and Conflict Resolution Institute in Jerusalem, offered a similar presentation vis-à-vis Israel.
Attendees of the workshop enjoyed a visit from Ms. Ulrike Hauer, Head of Section of Trade, Economy and Agriculture in the EC Delegation to Turkey. Ms. Hauer gave a thoughtful lecture and graciously agreed to be involved in one of the simulations illustrating the functioning of mediation in small commercial disputes.
In order to facilitate the dialogue between the participants from Turkey and the presenters, simultaneous translation was offered. A significant part of the program was dedicated to questions and answers about the participants' various ADR experiences.
